The Mint Room

Few desserts remind me why I love running my cheesecake blog as much as this one. At The Mint Room in Frederick, I had the chance to try a cheesecake unlike anything I’ve encountered on my Cheesecake With Jake journey — a Gulab Jamun Cheesecake, blending one of India’s most beloved sweets with the familiar comfort of cheesecake.

Before this visit, I had never tried gulab jamun. I had never even heard of it. But this experience changed that — and it changed my expectations of what a fusion cheesecake can be.

The presentation alone tells you this dessert is special. A generous slice is nestled in a deep ceramic bowl, surrounded by a pool of sweet, cardamom-infused cream sauce reminiscent of rabri. Sitting proudly on top are two whole gulab jamuns, crowned with delicate sheets of edible silver leaf (varak) — a traditional touch in Indian desserts that signals celebration and craftsmanship. Scattered rose petals and crushed pistachios bring color, aroma, and elegance to the plate.

Then the flavors begin to unfold.

The cheesecake filling is exceptionally smooth — rich, velvety, and lightly spiced, with gentle notes of cardamom enhancing the connection to traditional Indian sweets. The base incorporates soft, syrup-soaked pieces of gulab jamun, giving each bite a warm, floral sweetness that contrasts beautifully with the creamy cheesecake. It’s layered, nuanced, and unlike any slice I’ve had before.

The whipped topping adds airiness, while the saffron-tinted sweet milk sauce pooled beneath ties each bite together, ensuring that every spoonful is complete — creamy cheesecake, fragrant syrup, subtle spice, and a touch of crunch.

At $8, this dessert is an outstanding value. The craftsmanship, creativity, and cultural fusion far exceed the price point. It’s the type of cheesecake that isn’t just eaten — it’s experienced.

Verdict:

A stunning fusion of Indian tradition and classic cheesecake. From the gulab jamun above and below the filling to the cardamom-scented cream and edible silver, every element is intentional and beautifully executed. One of the most unique and memorable cheesecakes I’ve ever reviewed.

A well-deserved 10/10.
