When it comes to my love for food, two things always take the spotlight: cheesecake and sushi. So when a sushi craving led me to Old Dominion Grill and Sushi, I never expected to stumble upon a truly unique dessert experience. Among the menu’s offerings was something I couldn’t pass up—tempura cheesecake.
Given that I ordered this as takeout, plating wasn’t a major factor in my review. However, I still wanted to assess the flavors and textures to see if this deep-fried creation was worth the hype.
The first bite did not disappoint. The tempura-fried crust was surprisingly light, giving way to a vanilla cheesecake filling that had taken on a custard-like texture in some areas while remaining soft and fluffy in others. The contrast reminded me of deep-fried Oreo’s—warm, indulgent, and nostalgic.
While the flavors were enjoyable, I couldn’t help but feel like the presentation was a missed opportunity. Even in a to-go setting, a drizzle of raspberry sauce and a small dollop of whipped cream for aesthetics would have taken this to another level, adding a bit of brightness to the richness of the fried cheesecake.
That said, for just $5.99, this cheesecake is absolutely worth trying—if not for the sheer novelty, then for the enjoyable combination of textures and flavors. It may not be the best cheesecake I’ve ever had, but it’s certainly one of the most memorable. If you find yourself at Old Dominion Grill and Sushi, this is one dessert experience you won’t want to skip.
