Set right on South Bentz Street in the heart of downtown Frederick, BentzTown has quickly built a name for itself with its upbeat atmosphere, creative cocktails, and hearty comfort dishes. After a great dinner, I decided to cap things off with their Seasonal Cheesecake — a rotating feature that, in theory, should bring a fresh twist each visit.
When the dessert arrived, I was immediately drawn to its presentation. The slice sat neatly on a simple plate, drizzled with a bright berry sauce that added a nice visual pop. The crust looked golden and crisp — the kind that makes you eager for that first bite. My server mentioned that one of the waitress’s moms actually bakes these cheesecakes for the restaurant, which gave the experience a personal, local touch that I appreciated right away.
But despite the strong first impression, the flavor didn’t quite live up to the anticipation. The filling was smooth, creamy, and well-executed from a texture standpoint, but it lacked the sweetness or distinctive flavor needed to make it stand out. It was pleasant, but not memorable. The crust, which looked like it might be packed with flavor, ended up being fairly neutral, missing that buttery or spiced richness that typically ties a cheesecake together.
The berry drizzle offered a bit of tartness and helped brighten the plate, but it couldn’t carry the dessert on its own. For a seasonal rotation — especially during fall — the flavor choice felt a bit uninspired. There’s so much room for creativity this time of year, from warm spice notes to richer fall flavors, and this one simply played it too safe.
At $12, it’s on the pricier side for a single slice, and while the local bakery connection adds charm, the overall experience didn’t quite justify the cost. It’s a fine option if you’re already dining at BentzTown and want something light to end the meal, but it’s not one I’d go out of my way for.
Verdict:
A clean, nicely presented slice with a smooth texture and local story behind it — but ultimately, the flavor falls flat. For $12, it needs a bit more sweetness, creativity, or seasonal character to stand out.
