During a recent beach vacation, we made our usual stop at Ocean View Brewery, a go-to spot that always delivers good food, great drinks, and a laid-back vibe. This time, however, something on the dessert menu instantly caught my eye—Cherry Rhubarb Cobbler Cheesecake. Just the name alone was enough to grab my attention, but what made this visit even more exciting was the revelation that the desserts here are crafted by none other than Dru Tevis, the 2022 Holiday Baking Champion from Food Network’s Season 9 of Holiday Baking Championship.
For those unfamiliar, Dru Tevis has become a major name in the culinary world, especially here on the East Coast. He oversees the dessert programs for 16 restaurant concepts under SoDel Concepts and has been known for turning classic sweets into elevated culinary experiences. Knowing he had a hand in the creation of this cheesecake, I was ready for something special—and I was not disappointed.
When the cheesecake arrived, it was a showstopper. Plated on a sleek dark circular dish, it came beautifully dressed in a caramel sauce swirl, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a cloud of whipped cream, and a generous sprinkle of oat streusel that tied into the cobbler theme perfectly. Atop the cheesecake sat a gorgeous layer of tart cherry and rhubarb compote, with a delicate pink ganache giving off Pop-Tart vibes that worked surprisingly well.
The filling was rich and creamy, striking that perfect balance between indulgent and refreshing. The brown butter cake base gave this dessert an added depth of flavor, and while the crust was thin, it did exactly what it needed to do—held everything together while adding just a subtle crunch.
What really pushed this cheesecake into the “best of the best” tier was how all the elements—ice cream, whipped cream, caramel, streusel, and compote—melted and mingled together into a harmonious bite. It’s rare to find a dessert this layered, both in flavor and texture.
At $14, this cheesecake may not be the cheapest slice at the beach, but it absolutely earns its price tag. Between the portion size (more than enough to share, though you won’t want to) and the chef pedigree behind it, this dessert is a showcase of what happens when creative vision meets expert execution.
