One of my favorite parts of this cheesecake journey has been discovering the creative spins that restaurants and chefs put on the classic dessert—and this one from Nalu Surf Bar & Grill is a shining example of just that. Pineapple upside-down cake meets cheesecake in a dessert that’s both visually striking and bursting with flavor.
Presented on a sleek oval plate with two generous dollops of whipped cream on either side, the plating was simple yet effective. But what really caught my eye—and eventually my taste buds—was the cheesecake itself. The crust, baked on top in true upside-down cake fashion, was a thick, golden layer embedded with vibrant pineapple rings and ruby-red cherries. Even before taking a bite, it was clear this crust was going to deliver. And it did. Moist, flavorful, and sweetened perfectly by the fruit, it was one of the most memorable crusts I’ve ever had.
Beneath it sat a thick, creamy cheesecake filling that brought the entire concept together. The density was just right—substantial enough to hold up the generous topping but still smooth and indulgent. It complemented the caramelized crust and fruit beautifully, adding richness without overwhelming the sweetness of the pineapple.
My only regret? I devoured it too quickly. At just $12, it’s not only one of the more creative cheesecakes I’ve tried but also one of the most reasonably priced considering the quality and portion size. In fact, with Nalu’s hearty entrée portions, you may not think you have room for dessert—but I assure you, you’ll want to make space for this.
Between its standout creativity, balanced flavors, thoughtful execution, and irresistible presentation, Nalu has earned its place in the “Best of the Best.” If you’re looking to try something both fun and unforgettable, this dessert needs to be on your radar.
Welcome to the club, Nalu—you’ve more than earned it.
