There’s something exciting about trying a unique twist on cheesecake, and Saisaki Asian Fusion delivered exactly that with their Tempura Cheesecake. At first glance, the dish immediately caught my attention—golden, lightly battered, and drizzled with chocolate sauce, it promised an experience unlike any traditional slice.
The highlight of this dessert was undoubtedly the tempura frying. The batter was incredibly light, giving the cheesecake an airy crispness without overpowering its flavor. It reminded me of deep-fried ice cream, with the contrast of the warm, crispy exterior and the still-frozen interior creating a fun textural experience. While the deep frying added a unique element, it did leave the cheesecake itself slightly frozen, which took away from the creamy texture I typically enjoy.
While the chocolate drizzle was a fine touch, I couldn’t help but feel that a raspberry or strawberry sauce would have been a much better complement to the dish. A more decadent drizzle, both in quantity and vibrancy, would have elevated the plating and added a bit more balance to the overall sweetness.
As for the whipped cream and cherry? While I understand the appeal, they felt unnecessary in this presentation. It gave off more of a “birthday cake at a restaurant” vibe rather than a refined, carefully crafted cheesecake experience.
Overall, the Tempura Cheesecake at Saisaki was an enjoyable and creative dessert. It may not have been perfect, but the light and crispy batter made it a fun treat. If you’re looking for a unique cheesecake experience and enjoy deep-fried desserts, this is one worth trying—just be prepared for a slightly frozen interior and consider asking for an alternative sauce.
Would I get it again? Maybe—with a few tweaks, it could easily be an 8 or 9 out of 10!
